" Materials Exploration for Advanced Batteries "

Abstract:

  Limited performance of lithium-ion batteries forces us to develop advanced batteries. However, the presently-considered electrode materials are ion intercalation (carbon compounds, metal oxides and metal sulfides), alloying (phosphorus and tin) or conversion materials (metal oxides and metal sulfides), the energy and power densities of which are not satisfactory if the advanced batteries are to outperform the state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries. Hence, exploration for novel electrode materials is highly desired. In this seminar, I will demonstrate latent promises of various inorganic materials as the battery electrodes. The target materials include coordination compounds, metal oxides, and carbides.
